Purim originates from a decree issued against the Jews in the ancient Persian Empire — the region known today as Iran — during the reign of King Ahasuerus. Haman, a high-ranking minister in the kingdom, sought to destroy the Jewish people and set the date for the decree by casting lots, called “pur”, from which the name of the holiday, Purim, is derived.
