Most Semitic languages agree on the word for rain. Arabic has Maṭar. Aramaic has Meṭra. Akkadian had Muṭṭar. Even the Bible uses Maṭar. 🌧️📖 So why does modern Hebrew use Geshem? The honest answer is: We don't really know. It just shows up in the Bible alongside Matar, but its origins are murky. (It might be a scrambled version of an Arabic word for "tears"!)
